In death camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Sonderkommando were teams of prisoners who were forced to deal with other prisoners as they arrived-herding them into the gas chambers, sorting through their discarded clothes, and ferrying their bodies to the furnaces. The first feature film by László Nemes confronts a subject that many people would prefer not to think about, let alone to cast in dramatic form.
